But that was about the only thing that went wrong all day for the Junior Jays, who put on an impressive two-game performance at the Class A state tournament to capture their state-leading ninth championship.

    Scott Poehling won it by himself in 1976. Ted Lampkin and Harvey Bridges, with help from relay teammates, outscored the competition 70 years apart. Omaha North's girls topped the century mark two years ago and came close last year.

    New coaches at Burke, Benson
    Ben Holling is the new boys basketball coach at Omaha Burke and Tony Kobza has been hired at Omaha Benson as football coach. Holling, a Ralston graduate who played on Bellevue University's NAIA national runner-up team in 2004, has been a varsity assistant and junior varsity coach the past four seasons at Omaha Central. The Boys and Girls Club of the Midlands named him its junior varsity coach of the year in 2010.

    Hoops coach Vis decides to leave Harlan
    The lure of coaching in one of Iowa’s best leagues was too much for Tony Vis. So the Harlan Community girls basketball coach has resigned his position and accepted a similar post at Cedar Rapids Kennedy. The 41-year-old Vis compiled a 120-46 (.723) record in seven years at Harlan, including two trips to state. He has an overall record of 257-115 (.691), including stints at Walnut Ridge Baptist, Hudson and Audubon.
