Quinn leads Southern Valley past Holdrege

HOLDREGE — The Holdrege Dusters couldn’t find a way to stop Hunter Quinn.

The Southern Valley junior scored 27 points, grabbed 16 rebounds, made four steals and handed out two assists Saturday to lead the Eagles to a 54-42 victory in the championship of the Holdrege Holiday Tournament.

The Dusters (4-4) jumped to an 11-6 lead in the first quarter but the defending Class C-2 state cham

“I thought most of their points were problems we cold fix,” Southern Valley coach John Miller said. “Defensive discipline went out the door and created those opportunities for them. ... We were doing dumb things.”

He was confident the Eagles would correct their defensive woes, but he worried about the offense, except for one aspect — Quinn.

“We recognized right away they had no matchup for him inside, and if something works, don’t go away from it,” Miller said.

Quinn scored six straight baskets for the Eagles, taking passes down low and going to the basket, stealing the ball and racing in for a layup and grabbing offensive rebounds for follow shots.

“He’s long, he’s athletic and he mentally attacks the game,” Holdrege coach Drake Beranek said. “Quinn stepped up and they got it to him and he got some easy baskets around the lane. He kind of stepped up and took over the game and we had no answer for him tonight.”

And Holdrege switched roles in the second quarter, losing its mental edge. The Dusters committed seven turnovers in the second quarter and made 2 of 8 shots.

When Quinn finished his scoring streak, Southern Valley had tied the score at 16. Two 3-pointers by Alan Varela and one by Alex Kaup, as well as another basket by Quinn, finished off the half for the Eagles as they took a 27-16 lead at halftime.

The lead stretched to 14 before Holdrege had a little run to pull within eight.

“Defensively I thought we got stronger. They had a little run on us in the third quarter, but again we kind of got lazy defensively and gave up some transition baskets,” Miller said. “They play hard. If you get careless with the ball, they’ll take advantage of it, and if you get careless defensively, they’ll take advantage of it, so we kept preaching to our kids that they had to maintain discipline.”

Seth Miller rebuilt the Eagles’ lead with a 3-pointer and two free throws on back-to-back possessions. Holdrege only briefly had the lead under double digits after that as Quinn added two more baskets and 3 of 4 free throws in the fourth quarter.

Beranek said the Dusters took “a couple steps backward” in their loss to the Eagles, and having an opponent put together a big game like Quinn has been a nemesis so far this season.

“We need somebody to stop those guys,” he said.
