McCool boys fall in OT to Heartland Lutheran

MCCOOL JUNCTION – The McCool Junction Mustangs forced overtime with a buzzer beater in regulation and the Heartland Lutheran Red Hornets returned the favor in the extra period.

Heartland Lutheran's Grant Suchanek sank a baseline 3-pointer as time expired to give the Red Hornets an 82-80 win Tuesday night.

The two teams went up and down the floor all night as both offenses were hitting on all cylinders.

The Mustangs led 20-13 at the end of the first quarter and still held a 31-28 lead at the end of two periods.

The Red Hornets took the lead in the third quarter for the first time since the 6:08 mark of the opening quarter when Devin Hueftle converted an old-fashioned 3-point play for a 6-5 lead.

McCool Junction would then take it back on a jumper from A. J Hamm and hold that lead until the third quarter.

The Mustangs trailed 49-47 entering the final eight minutes of action.

McCool Junction (2-2) sent the game to OT outscoring Heartland 23-21 in the fourth quarter.

In the OT session the Mustangs led 80-79 before Suchanek nailed the 3-point shot to give the Red Hornets the win and move them to 4-2 on the year.

McCool was sled in scoring by Alex Preslicka with 24. He also hauled in six boards. A. J. Hamm tossed in 19 points, Auston Calvert added 15, Gabe Fisher went for nine points and nine rebounds, and Conner Cogswell was charted with eight.

McCool was 23-40 from the field on 2-point shots and 8-25 from the 3-point circle for 31-65 overall. The Mustangs were 10-14 at the free throw line.

McCool (2-2) will host the Shelby-Rising City Huskies Friday night in its final game before the holiday break.
