DONIPHAN — Sometimes you’re the hammer. Sometimes, you’re the nail. There wasn’t much question about who was who Thursday night.
Twin River unleashed an 11-run second inning as the Titans defeated Grand Island Central Catholic/Doniphan-Trumbull 12-2. Twin River took advantage of extra base-hits — three triples and a two run homer — and three Crusader errors to jump to a 12-0 lead after two innings.
After the game, GICC/DT coach Brock Culler struggled to explain how his team had so quickly gone off the rails.
“This team is physically capable of playing with any team that steps on the field with us,” he said. “I really believe that. But our competitive edge is not there right now. When our team has something not go their way, it’s like the air going out of a balloon.
“Everything feeds off everything else with us, and what we have to learn how to do is stop things when the first thing goes wrong and not let them build.”
Twin River got on the board in the first as Maddie Kucera beat out an infield single, then came home on a single to left center by Jenna Oberhauser. After the Crusaders failed to advance their leadoff hitter the Titans came to bat in the second inning and turned things around quickly.
Lexee Brandenburger hit a two-out single over first base to score two, then Alissa Paczosa slammed a homer to right field to up the lead to 5-0. The visitors then got three consecutive triples, and those, combined with three errors by the Crusaders, allowed Twin River to build a towering 12-0 lead.
Culler saw his team respond in the third, as GICC/DT extended the game with a pair of runs. Faviola Seiler singled to right and stole second, then scored after an error in left field. Alex Kentner then picked up an RBI single as she brought Mariah Galvan home. A fly to right ended the inning, and in the fourth the Crusaders went down in order to end the game on the 10-run rule.
“The easy thing would have been for the girls to say it’s over and let’s go home,” Culler said. “We needed a run and we got two. At that point you could feel a little energy coming back into the dugout, but we couldn’t keep it going.
“This is a learning process for our team, and unfortunately they’re learning it the hard way. It’s painful to see them go through it. We still have a ton of confidence in this team, but we have to get them to believe it.”
