GILTNER – If the McCool Junction Mustangs were looking for a signature win to cap their season in a big way on the road Friday night at Class D2 No. 4 Giltner.
The Mustangs (14-5) picked up a big win in CRC boys action by the final score of 47-44 and picked up a lot of momentum as they head to Class D1-2 subdistrict play starting Tuesday night at Fillmore Central High School.
The Mustangs are the No. 2 seed and will take on No. 3 seed Exeter-Milligan (16-6) at 7:45 p.m. Bruning-Davenport-Shickley is the No. 1 seed and opens with No. 4 Heartland at 6 p.m. The two winners meet Thursday night at 7.
A 13-8 first quarter run opened the big quarter for the Mustangs as Coleman Cogswell led the team in scoring with 20 and Jared Morner tossed in nine points.
Giltner trimmed the margin to four at 23-19 at the break and shaved off another point in the third to make it 30-27 as the two teams went to the final eight minutes.
Both offenses clicked to the tune of 17 points each, but that was enough for the Mustangs to pull the upset.
The Mustangs were 13-39 from the floor and 13-18 at the foul line.
“We started the game strong and took good shots and for the most part took care of the ball,” said Mustangs head coach Trent Colle. “I am proud of these guys for what they have done on the court this season, but we are not done yet.”
