Titan wins 100 butterfly at state meet

MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — It’s one thing to have the best time on paper.

It’s another to go out and prove that you’re the best in the state. Council Bluffs Lewis Central junior RJ Hemmingsen did that on Saturday.

Hemmingsen captured the 100-yard butterfly in the state meet at the Marshalltown YMCA, clocking 50.25 seconds to finish well ahead of second-place Des Moines Roosevelt senior Max Ward (51.31) and become only the second Titan to win an individual state swim title. Colin Luth claimed the 100 breaststroke in 1994.

It also was a historic day for the L.C. team. The Titans earned 100 points and an eighth-place finish, the best in school history.

Muscatine (180) topped the field, followed by Dubuque Senior (147) and West Des Moines Dowling (129).

“We swam very fast, and it was pretty exciting,” L.C. coach Bruce Schomburg said. “We scored 35 more points than we did last year, the most ever at a state meet. Clearly, Muscatine was the best, but we were right in there with the big boys.”

Hemmingsen finished second to Ward last year, but turned the tables in emphatic fashion.

“It was pretty surreal,” Hemmingsen said. “It took awhile for it to sink in. I had confidence going in, but anything can happen at these big meets.

“This is definitely the biggest highlight of my swimming career. Everyone swam really well, and with Brandon (Farnum) being a senior, we wanted to make it special for him.”

Hemmingsen also placed third in the 50 freestyle and teamed with Spencer Smith, Taylor Severson and Farnum to finish fourth in the 200 freestyle relay. Hemmingsen, Farnum, Ryan Price and Caleb Shudak took eighth in the 400 freestyle relay.

Farnum also earned fourth-place finishes in the 50 and 100 freestyle races. Price was fourth in the 500 freestyle and Shudak took seventh in the 100 backstroke.

In addition to Hemmingsen’s school-record time in the 100 butterfly, the two relays and Farnum’s effort in the 100 freestyle all established school records.

“All the kids showed up and were very competitive and dropped a lot of times,” Schomburg said. “This is the best boys team I’ve ever coached.”
