York boys overwhelm Bison

YORK -- The Bison played hard, but had far too few hooves and horns to fend off the Duke boys Tuesday night.

The 13th victory of the season against four losses for York came by a landslide final score of 90-36 after York led by 30 in the second period and 40 in the third.

Junior guard Leighton Thomas struck the first blow for the Dukes with a three to open game scoring. Fellow junior Ty Danielson tacked on a two and York set sail on an early lead that reached 14-0 after Ryan Dolan drained a two, then followed with a three.

Evan Neville nailed a three, 6-4 senior Jared Miller hit for two and the first eight minutes finally came to a halt with the Dukes already up 15 points, 25-10.

Dolan took his turn to open scoring with a three to get the second period started York's way. By the time Austin Taylor hit a field goal with an assist from Jonah Otte, then snaked an offensive rebound back into the string, it was 33-12.

All the scoring support from multiple Dukes was key when team offensive leader Danielson found himself facing a triangle-and-two, meaning a full-time double-team from the Bison defense.

With everybody else picking up the slack for York, Central City's mounting deficit hit 30 points when Colton Zumpfe took a pass from Danielson and converted it into a trey that put the Dukes up 45-15 deep in the second period.

By halftime it was academic at 49-17 York.

The Dukes were up 40 by the end of the third, 70-30, and broke the 50-point barrier at 86-33 with 2:00 to go.

York coach Scott Lamberty said the game gave lots of kids the chance to play significant minutes.

"That's important," he said, "especially at this time of year."

The coach was pleased at the way his kids "came back after a big, big week" and didn't take the Central City game off after winning the program's first Central Conference Tournament title in a decade Saturday night. "They still played hard ... they went after it again" and "they shared the ball. At the half we talked about continuing to play hard."

Lamberty said the fast start was important with Danielson under a blanket.

"We got some threes and got to the basket," he said, "that took some pressure off."

York improves to 13 up and just four down going into a visit with the Vikings of Lakeview Saturday night. The Dukes beat Lakeview last Friday in the Central Conference semifinals.

The Bison dip to 2-17 with the loss and will host Raymond Central on Saturday.
