HOLDREGE, Neb. — Beatrice’s Hanah Barnard scored all eight of her team’s points in the second overtime as the No. 1-ranked Lady Orange crept past seventh-ranked Holdrege 64-58 Friday night.
Beatrice (9-1) needed a basket by Jill Faxon with 9 seconds left in regulation to force the overtime. Then, at the end of the first overtime, Barnard blocked a shot at the buzzer by Holdrege’s Rachel Jelden that would have won the game for the Dusters (9-2)
“I thought we had it,” Holdrege coach Trent Benjamin said. “It’s a tough one to lose, but I’m proud of the kids.”
The Dusters, down 27-20 at halftime, led by as many as eight after a third-quarter run put Beatrice on its heels.
“That third quarter was kind of tough. They just came out after us right away,” Beatrice coach Ryan Luke said. “They did a great job running their offense and running us off screens and using screens and knowing where they want to throw the ball. They want to get the ball into Jelden.”
Jelden finished with 26 points, 13 rebounds, two assists and two steals, and her team got a spark when Maggie Nelson, Holdrege’s only senior, hit a pair of 3-pointers on her way to a 14-point night.
Jenna Gillespie also hit a 3, part of her 14 points.
“We just have a nice inside-outside game,” Benjamin said. “Maggie hit some big 3s, and Rachel is pretty tough to defend down low.”
Beatrice fought back from a 39-31 deficit to tie the score at 45 midway through the fourth quarter.
Chantel Adams, who scored 14 points, hit a 3-pointer to start Beatrice’s comeback and it was her basket that tied the score.
Holdrege had a 54-52 lead with 37 seconds left and fouls to give. The Dusters took advantage of that situation, fouling to disrupt the Beatrice offense while taking time off the clock.
Beatrice weathered the attack, getting the ball to Faxon on an inbounds play, where she hit a short jumper, getting it off before any Duster could reach her and delay the game more. She finished with 12 points.
Holdrege had another chance to win at the end of the first overtime. With the score tied at 56 and 10 seconds on the clock, the Dusters inbounded the ball and looked inside.
“I know where they wanted to throw the ball and I hoped we knew who needs to help,” Luke said. “We did a good job because Hanah Barnard came over and got a hand on the ball.”
It was the first of several big plays by Barnard. She opened the second overtime with a basket, then went to the free-throw line to finish with 20 points and wrap up the win.
“We scored first. Then we got a stop and a rebound and that was the game. Obviously there were some other things that happened ... but in overtime, those four minutes go pretty fast,” Luke said.
Not committing the foul at the end of regulation, then putting Barnard on the free-throw line in overtime were among “a lot of little mental mistakes that ultimately decided the ballgame, but it was not due to the lack of effort. ... We’re growing and we’re learning,” Benjamin said.
While Holdrege is young, Beatrice put five seniors on the floor and Luke rotated players off the bench liberally through the first three quarters.
Only six Holdrege players saw action and Benjamin said Beatrice’s depth and senior experience were keys.
“They really understand what they’re doing out there and we had a silly foul we probably shouldn’t have committed with about a minute, 20 left when we’re down two and it’s their best free-throw shooter,” Benjamin said. “They’re just things we need to learn.”
